Electronic identification and movement recording of livestock has begun with sheep and may be required for other species in the coming years. With electronic identification (EID) will come new requirements for recording and reporting of animal movements. BMPA will place guidance and other related material on its website to help members keep up to date with what is required from abattoirs. Also here will be information on applying to be a Central Control Recording Centre (CPRC).

To avoid small sheep farms having to purchase reading equipment, Defra has made provision for livestock markets and slaughterhouses to read the electronic data on the animals and send it back to the keeper. Sites that do this will be known as a Central Point Recording Centre (CPRC). Defra envisages that arrangements made between keepers and CPRCs will be on a commercial basis, certainly keepers may choose to sell to CPRCs to avoid having to purchase reading equipment. CPRCs could help their keepers exploit the electronic data (particularly once the EID database is up and running) by including MLC ratings, etc for individual animals.

To apply to be a CPRC go to the Animal Health website where you will find the CPRC approval criteria as well as the application form.
