Climate Change Levy Discount Scheme

Businesses should not miss out on a discount that could refund 80% of the Government’s Climate Change Levy, equivalent to a 5% reduction in energy costs.

Reduce your energy costs and save the planet
The BMPA operates a discount scheme specifically for the meat and meat products industry. The paperwork is simple and the commitments required are stretching but achievable. To apply, a business needs only to provide figures for a year’s production and energy use and it will receive the discount in advance of meeting the targets.

The Climate Change Levy discount
The Climate Change Levy was introduced by Government in 2001 to encourage businesses to improve energy efficiency. It has been applied to electricity, gas, LPG and coal, but not oil fuel where the tax burden is already substantial. Government believed that the levy would raise awareness of climate change within the business community and, if it changed behaviour, would be an effective tool to lower emissions of Carbon Dioxide. We expect that the Climate Change Levy will be with us until 2013.

However, in addition to the business benefit of reduced energy costs, there is a carrot to encourage businesses to reduce emissions. Alongside the levy, Government has encouraged the development of what are called Climate Change Agreements. Typically industry specific, these Agreements can offer an 80% discount from the levy where a sector commits to meet targets to improve energy efficiency or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Meat and meat product businesses can take advantage of this incentive through the BMPA Climate Change Levy Discount Scheme.

How to apply
To apply, please contact the CCL Help Line to request an application pack for the BMPA scheme. You will need to complete a few simple forms and then be asked to sign the agreement. Once Defra have approved these documents you will be entitled to claim the 80% CCL discount. This happens when you provide your energy suppliers with two simple Revenue & Customs forms. Throughout all stages of this process you can use the Help Line for guidance and advice.
