British Meat Processors Association

About Us

The British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) is the leading trade association in the meat and meat product industry. Collectively, our members serve the vast majority of the UK population through both the food service and retail channels.

We represent businesses big and small, publicly and privately owned, and with interests that reach across the entire supply chain, including farming, slaughtering, processing, manufacturing, wholesale, distribution, and packing. Our members range from small, progressive abattoir businesses supplying local customers to large consumer brand owners. Our members supply branded and retailer own-label meat and meat products across a range of different meat species and foods.

This diversity serves to enrich our organisation and ensures that we are truly representative in our dealings with government in the UK and in Europe. We are also strengthened through the involvement of Associate Members in supporting and allied industries, including retailer, service and ingredient suppliers.

In the BMPA, all have the opportunity to work within an organisation at the centre of the British food industry.

Activity
The purpose of the BMPA is to represent and promote a sustainable, competitive and professional meat and meat products industry.

Our key objectives are:

  • To maintain and promote high product and professional standards in the British meat industry
  • To achieve a regulatory and policy regime that enables the meat industry to be competitive and to meet its customers’ needs
  • To be the primary source of authoritative information and advice on all issues relating to the slaughter, processing, manufacturing of and trade in meat and meat products
  • To help the meat industry to meet its environmental, social and economic responsibilities

Our main activities are centred on:

  • Monitoring key developments affecting our industry
  • Providing information and guidance to members, including advice on a wide range of technical, legislative and regulatory issues
  • Representing our members’ interests to Government and its agencies and to the EU authorities
  • Owning and managing the BMPA product Standards
  • Providing a forum for shared experience and discussion on issues affecting our industry

As members of the relevant EU trade associations, we are able to take forward the issues that affect our members into the heart of the EU.

In all these activities, we draw expertise from the best source of all, our membership. We also maintain strong working relationships with other organisations up and down the supply chain and across the food industry in general.

Organisation
The BMPA is headed by our President, and supported by a London-based Secretariat managed by the Director.

The organisation’s current President is David Gunner who chairs the BMPA Management Council, which oversees the financial and organisational affairs of the BMPA, as well as the work of the BMPA’s sector and technical committees.

The BMPA Director, Stephen Rossides leads the work carried out by a small London-based executive team that covers a wide range of policy, legislative, regulatory and technical issues affecting the meat industry.
